What Size Moving Truck or Trailer Do You Really Need?

Planning a move in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, or Northern New Mexico? One of the biggest questions we hear from customers is:
“What size moving truck or trailer do I need?”

Choosing the right size can save you time, fuel, and multiple trips — but picking one that’s too small or too big can waste money and add stress. Here’s how to choose the perfect moving truck or trailer for your next move.

1. Small Moves (Studio or 1-Bedroom Apartment)

If you’re moving out of a small apartment or dorm, a 10- to 15-foot truck or a single-axle trailer is usually enough.

Ideal for:

  • 1–2 rooms of furniture

  • A bed, couch, small tables, and boxes

  • Short local moves or storage cleanouts

💡 Tip: For tight city areas like downtown Santa Fe or university housing, smaller trucks are easier to park and maneuver.

2. Medium Moves (2–3 Bedroom Homes)

For medium-sized moves, a 17- to 20-foot truck works best. It can handle several rooms of furniture and still fit in most driveways.

Ideal for:

  • Average-sized family homes

  • Appliances, mattresses, and furniture

  • Local or short-distance moves between cities like Santa Fe and Albuquerque

If you’re towing a vehicle, a dual-axle trailer gives you extra space for heavier or bulkier items.

3. Large Moves (3–5 Bedroom Homes)

For larger homes or long-distance moves, go with a 22- to 26-foot truck. This size is best when you’re moving everything — furniture, appliances, tools, and storage items.

Ideal for:

  • Whole-house moves

  • Cross-state or long-distance hauls

  • Bulky items like dressers, washers, and sectionals

💡 Tip: If you’re moving long distances from Northern New Mexico, make sure your truck has a loading ramp or lift gate for easier loading.

4. Trailer Options for Smaller Loads

If you’re only moving a few heavy or oversized items — like appliances, furniture, or yard equipment — a flatbed or enclosed trailer might be a better fit than a truck.

Trailers are perfect for:

  • Hauling between storage units

  • Delivering single pieces of furniture

  • Picking up materials for remodeling projects

Anytime Moving & Hauling can help load, secure, and transport items safely — whether you’re using your own trailer or one of ours.

5. Don’t Forget About Weight and Space

Overloading a small truck can cause damage or require extra trips. At the same time, renting a truck that’s too big means paying for unused space.
When in doubt, it’s better to go slightly larger — especially if you have bulky items, heavy furniture, or lots of boxes.

Our team can give you a quick estimate based on your home size and list of items.
